At Waldo Burton, we teach our students the importance of being active in their communities. Whether it is your neighborhood, city, parish, state, or country, involvement in the world around you helps you grow and helps others along the way.
To show our boys what involvement looks like, we have taken time over the summer to explore our environments. We started with experiences within our state!
To become more familiar with our city, we want to introduce our students to different leaders in the community. The NOPD has started a program including basketball coaches and officers who visit schools and community centers to run practices with the youth of New Orleans.
This department recently visited Waldo Burton and led a practice. Afterwards, the officers held a Q&A with the boys about who they are, the various types of jobs the NOPD offers, and what is needed to pursue those careers. The officers shared their backgrounds and explained that some of them never thought they would become NOPD officers. The boys really enjoyed both parts of the visit and asked great questions.
Further from home, we recently took a trip to Baton Rouge to learn more about our state capital. During our visit, our students toured both the current and the old Louisiana State Capitol buildings with excellent guides.
At the current state capitol, the boys learned about its construction, noting it was modeled after the Nebraska State Capitol. We also discovered that it is the tallest state Capitol with views overlooking the city of Baton Rouge and beyond!
During the tour of the old Capitol, students enjoyed viewing the beautiful stained glass windows, listening to the engaging guide, and having a fun time rolling down the hill outside.
We will continue to explore our own communities and beyond this summer, so stay tuned!
